FTA and Parenting

You never thought you would be in this situation. You traveled the world in your youth, everywhere from the steps of the Taj Mahal in the east to those of Machu Picchu in the West. You have always assumed that everyone knew all about these places. You picked up bits and pieces of eleven different languages. It may have only been enough to be able to say please, thank you and where is the bathroom, but you picked them up. You have photos of the most magical places that pale in comparison to the memories in your head. Most of all, you have looked forward to imbuing your children with the same love of the world, interest in new places and other cultures.

You are rather depressed to discover that not only do your children think that Taj Mahal is the name of your next door neighbor’s dog, they aren’t remotely interested when you tell them what the Taj Mahal actually is, or where it is. They certainly don not appear to be interested in ever going there. They believe that the whole world speaks English. To your kids, all other countries are so far away that they are of no importance to their world.

You really don’t know what to do about this. You don’t want to be an aggressive parent and force them into becoming cultured. You would like them to take an interest; you just can’t figure out how. Well, not to worry; the perfect tool is sitting in your living room as you read. Your television can interest them in things you would never dream possible; don’t underestimate this versatile invention. Teamed with a couple of other modern inventions, the satellite dish and the free to air receiver, you should be able to solve the issue of your kids’ lack of cultural awareness.

With a free to air receiver you can receive programs from all over the world. This will have a two fold benefit for your kids. First, they will probably be curious enough on hearing a different language to ask what language it is and possibly where it is spoken. Secondly, you most likely will discover a program which they really want to understand. At this point, you may need to look into language classes for beginners. You will have achieved your goal to stimulate their interest beyond their home.

The fact is, television is often blamed for making our minds into mush and turning us into sheep. In truth, television has a lot to offer. If you are wise about what you choose to watch and what you make available to your children, you will be able to unlock a huge source of educational material for them. They will have access to all sorts of information including historical, cultural and linguistic, from all over the world. Television is only a tool – it’s what you do with it that counts. It is in your best interest to get a free to air receiver and make sure that you really are using that tool to its maximum potential.
