All About Wine

Wine is a very popular beverage for many people in America and across the world. People in all walks of life enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, when getting together with friends, or when dining out at a nice restaurant. Wine comes in many different types, each with varying quality, cost, and availability. For all of its gaining popularity, wine is not a recent addition to the human experience. It has been around, in one form or another, for thousands of years.

The simplest definition of wine is that it is a beverage made from fermented grape juice. The process of fermenting creates alcohol as yeast breaks down the sugars that are found naturally in grapes. Different grapes and different yeasts have been experimented with over the centuries to produce different types of wine. Grapes are grown all over the world, but mainly require a temperate climate that is not too hot or too cold. Grapes do not handle freezing temperatures well, and will wilt on the vine if the weather is too hot. Other fruit juices can be fermented to create alcoholic beverages, but just using the word “wine” is universally recognized as coming from grapes.

Wine has been around in some form since at least 6,000 B.C. At the dawn of civilization, people discovered how to make wine from local grape varieties, and it has stuck with us ever since. For thousands of years, before refrigeration and reliable water filtration, wine was the most popular drink around. When put into an airtight bottle, wine can last for years. Clean water was often difficult to come by, so wine was used as a staple. Wine was diluted with water to make it very weak, and was most of what a person would drink in a day. The alcohol would kill whatever impurities lived in the water, which often came from lakes or rivers on the edge of town that were far from clean due to sewage runoff and overuse.

Wine comes in different varieties. Red wine is made from the dark red or purple grapes. It is usually served at room temperature and requires time to “breathe.” When exposed to the air, it oxidizes, which alters the flavor. Oxidation is required for most red wines to bring out the intended flavor of the wine. White wine is made from white or green grapes. White wines are usually served chilled. White wine requires some oxidation, but not near as much as red wine. White wines often have a dry taste. Wine enthusiasts use the beverage to accentuate the flavors in meals and appetizers. Different wines are suggested for different dishes, such as certain types of red wine for veal and certain types of white wine for fish.

Wine is found almost everywhere and has a very rich history. From Europe, to America, to Asia, to Australia, wine is grown locally and imported for people who truly enjoy the beverage. Wine has been around since the beginning of civilization, and it is a good bet that it will be around for a long time to come.

Etched Glass for Kids

Buying gifts for kids for birthdays and holidays can be either difficult or boring depending on the child. It’s difficult when you have no idea what kinds of things the child likes in the way of toys, games, and books. There is always the fear of either choosing a gift that the child already has or the worse scenario of choosing something he or she hates. If you are buying a gift for your own child, it can get redundant after a while if the same type of gift is requested again and again. Buying your son his twelfth Lego set or your daughter her third Bratz doll doesn’t inspire originality or excitement on either of your parts.

When searching for that perfect gift, personalization is the key. Giving them a present that is unique and speaks directly to them will not only surprise them but will also be fun for you to purchase.

A great gift for children of any age is a customized etched glass. Glasses come in all shapes and sizes from squat mugs with handles to juice tumblers. The glass can be personalized not only with the child’s name but also with his or her picture etched in the glass. Children not only think that these customized etched glasses are fun to use, but they can have something that is just for them that no one else can use. This is especially useful in a multi-child household where the kids argue over possessions frequently. Individual glasses make ownership clear.

A customized etched glass also has the side benefit of promoting the drinking of water, milk and fruit juice. A child is more likely to drink a glass of water or get in the recommended amount of fresh milk if it comes with his or her own name on it. You can also have the “allowed” beverages etched on the glass so children know that the glass is not for soda and Kool-Aid.

When buying a personalized etched glass for a child, it is important to pay attention to the details. The glass itself should be thick and heavy, often termed restaurant-quality. A thin cheap glass will chip and shatter more easily with the expected rough handling of a child. This will ensure that the glass lasts many years and becomes a treasured keepsake.

The etching itself should be deep and substantial. Glasses that are acid-etched on the surface will wear out and the lettering will look dingy after a short period of time. The etching should be done with a laser or other precision instrument and create a deep run in the glass.

Watching a child open the gift of a personalized etched glass with a picture on it can be a fun experience all on its own. A glass can make a great birthday gift or even takeaway gifts for birthday attendees. If you enlist the parents ahead of time to provide you with a picture of their child, you can have a personalized glass for everyone. It will be a birthday remembered by all.
