How to Choose the Right Style for You

There are some women who just seem to look perfect no matter what they’re wearing. While it’s easy to dismiss it as either her looks or some other factor that she can’t control, the likely truth is that she knows how to put together a look and uses accessories to complete it. This is good news for the rest of us because it means that, with the right accessories, we can also be stylish.

One accessory that can make or break a look is a handbag. With so many colors and styles available, it’s often difficult to know what will work and what won’t. Should you try to match your outfit? Your body shape? There are several things to consider when purchasing a handbag to complete your style.

The first issue is whether you are trying to attain a casual or formal look. Some handbag styles are more suited for one or the other. Large shapeless bags give a more informal look while tiny, rigid-sided angular handbags project a precise and formal look. If your outfits tend to have small, delicate details such as buttons and collars, a smaller, rectangular handbag works well. If many of your outfits include long flowing lines and brighter colors, a larger handbag better matches the largess of the look.

A common fashion rule is to choose a handbag that is the opposite of your body type. So, for example, if you are tall and lean, a rounded style handbag offsets well. If you are rounder and curvier, an angular bag offsets your look. Keep proportions in mind as well. If you are extremely tall, a tiny handbag will look even more exaggerated against your frame. If you are tiny and petite, a gigantic round sac-type handbag will accentuate your stature.

Consider the material of the handbag. While new synthetic materials and colors can offer new looks, you can never go wrong with leather. A leather handbag has staying power. Properly cared for, leather can last for decades and always exudes an elegant timeless look that goes well with any fashion. Leather handbags come in all styles and in several colors so you can put a leather handbag together with any ensemble. Leather also holds up better than any other material. Over time, the rich natural grain shows through and looks more opulent. The leather itself, while soft and supple, is strong and resists tears and scrapes. Small scuffs can be easily buffed out.

When deciding on a handbag, keep in mind its purpose and not just the fashion. If you are constantly out of the house working or doing errands, a more roomy handbag will be far more practical than a tiny purse the size of a postage stamp. Think about what you are likely to put in your bag on a regular basis. Baby bottles? Band-aids? File folders? Curtain samples? Ultimately, it is the utility of the handbag that will determine how much use you will get out of it, not its shape or color.

The right handbag can make or break your own personal style. Choose one or two that will complement your figure, your fashion sense, and your lifestyle.
